12/4/16 job hunting, walks and projects…

William is still looking for a job. We have started applying for him at the businesses right by our house and will work our way away in a big circle. We copied a map.of town and enlarged the area around our house and are highlighting where we have applied. Pizza Hut called yesterday. They had gotten his application and wanted to see if he had a driver’s license. He said no. The lady told William that they would keep his application on file and might be hiring in the kitchen when the weather gets colder.
Maggie is in college. She is not struggling but it is not easy. She does like school. She needs to join a club. She needs some friends. I think that she needs to join a club, but Maggie is an introvert and thinks that she is fine, This weekend she may go volunteer with some students that are also in Environmental Science. She is bringing home the information on where and when. Maggie is still making a lot of dragons out of rubber bands. She really enjoys making them. In one of her classes she has met a boy. It is her intro to Environmental Science class. The class is only a half of a semester.Maggie says that this boy is just like William. The class went for a walk around campus to look at trees. The teacher showed different kinds of trees and interesting facts about the campus. The boy gave Maggie some twigs. Maggie tossed the twigs back at him and he gave her some leaves, which she tossed back at him too. Maggie decided that he is a lot like William, her brother. His back pack has a solar panel on it and he acts and talks like William. Maggie decided to tell the boy one of William’s jokes. The boy thought that she was the funniest person that he had ever met. She had a good walk around the campus.
Beth has gotten her senior project. She has been so worried. If the project is something that you don’t want to do, it makes a long year. The students had a choice between taking a laser pointer and making it into a game, something else and making a cage around a new robot that the school is getting. One of the arms on the robot is about six feet long. They also need to decide where in the room to place the robot and where to move everything else that had been in that spot. She wanted the robot and got it.Woo Hoo!

11/21/16 jackets, pick up times and the cat…

We are looking for a jacket for Maggie. She has a jacket from last year but the zipper does not work all of the time. Maggie is tough on her zippers. Her jackets are in good shape but the zippers wear out. I save her jackets, one day I will learn to sew and replace her zippers. We are looking at Goodwill or Plato’s Closet, the resale shop. The winter jackets are just starting to come out. William has three jackets, he has stopped growing at 6′ 2″, and Beth had a jacket from last year, but we found one at Goodwill that she liked, so we bought it. It was only $7. If this winter is bad, I want to make sure that the kids have warm jackets.

I went to pick Maggie up at school tonight. She had said to pick her up at seven. She didn’t come out of the building. I texted her email to say that I was there, she won’t carry her cell phone. No answer. At seven thirty I texted home to Beth to see if she had called. No answer from Beth. I don’t want to panic too early, but if she is hurt or needs me, I don’t want to wait, but its not like Maggie to be this late. At twenty after I parked the car and headed into the building. I decided that if she was in there making bracelets on her loom I would take it. I found Maggie at her normal computer doing chemistry and watching a movie. My kids do there homework with a movie on or music playing, I can’t do that. She was surprised to see me. She thought that we had set a time of nine o’clock. I said OK and went home. We live sort of close to the university.
When I picked her up later I suggested that she write down the time. Maybe putting it in her planner. She said that that wouldn’t work because she would need to get it out of her backpack and put it back in each morning. She is not a morning person and doesn’t want all of that commotion in the morning. I suggested she could write the time on one piece of paper and keep it in her pocket. Each night scribbling out the time and writing a new one each day. She said no. She would take a piece of paper and cut it into little squares and keep all of the blank squares in her jacket pocket. Each day pulling out a different paper and writing the pick up time on on. We will see how it works.
When we got home our cat was waiting for us. She has been looking tired lately. Maggie picked her up and held her. Mandy likes to have someone with her all of the time. She likes to be held if we are standing up, but as soon as we sit down, she runs off.

11/20/16 senior projects, field trips and the creek…

Beth’s class is picking senior projects. They were introduced today. The choices were an invention to keep an air compressor quiet, something to go around a robot or something to do with the little laser lights, making a game out of it. They haven’t chosen yet but Beth likes the lasers the best. They need to pick teams too to do the projects. Her class is going to Chicago in two weeks to see a manufacturing museum and to a manufacturing trade show. She is taking one outfit and some snacks and two teddy bears, one for her friend and one for her. She is still so young, and older. She is going out of town with her class, but chooses which teddy bears to take with them. She needed a planner for school. I never thought I would hear her say that. She wants to keep track of all of her assignments and be in all of these clubs. She likes her classes and will start reading Beowulf this week. We went to the car show yesterday.
Maggie had Environmental Science class today. They went out to the creek today to take samples and to get used to the waders and the nets. Maggie has used waders and nets in high school but to a lot of the class this is all new. They all put on waders and went into the creek to look for crayfish which live in shallow water. Maggie found a spot that looked shallow so she stepped in and it was really a big hole. She was away from the other students so she had to get out herself. Se finally pulled her feet out of this mud but she swayed and got a lot of water in her waders. She had to get out of the hole without falling into the water or loosing the net. She used the net as a walking stick to get out. The kids caught some crayfish and threw them back. They were just practicing with the nets and waders. Maggie came home so happy. She loves going to the creek to collect samples. She had wet shoes and socks and pants. Maggie went to her next class and then I picked her up at the bus drop off with no shoes and socks.

11/19/16 getting school books for Maggie…

When Maggie started college this semester, we had some of trouble getting her books. We bought one of Maggie’s books online. That sentence sounds so simple. I guess that if everything we did didn’t come with a story, I wouldn’t have anything to write about. Maggie needed a science book. The teacher told them that they could get it online. On all of the other books Maggie wanted an actual book, but on this one she said that an online one was OK. When she went online I asked Maggie if she was sure that this was the correct book. Remember that now that she is in college, I am not getting any information from the high school teachers. She said that she was not sure. Maggie does have a lot of science due this week and needed the book. Maggie decided to go to class on Tuesday and ask the teacher which book she needed. I said great, but please see if she has office hours that day so if you are still confused after you talk in class you can go to her office and she can pull up the book on her computer and you will know which one we should buy when you get home.
Maggie comes home and she looks up the book. I asked her if it was the correct book…expecting her to say, yes the teacher confirmed it…but she said…maybe, I should email the teacher. She sent a screen print of the book that she thought was correct to the teacher and started doing math. We had dinner and Maggie did more math. Maggie has homework due this week and has no book and doesn’t know which one to buy and it is getting late. Maybe the teacher didn’t have office hours today so that they couldn’t look up the book. It is so frustrating when they are older and you want to help them, but can only offer suggestions.

5/1/16 pretest, meetings and Spring Break…

William’s e-mail still isn’t working so he had the employment agency sent the test to my e-mail. He took the test, but when he was done it was too late to call them. He can call tomorrow.
I need to ask Maggie how her meeting with the entrepreneurship teacher went. Did he open up the first test? She joined the class late and missed the first test. She needs to take this test and pass it to be able to pass the class
Beth has spring break next week. I emailed her math teacher to ask if Beth can do assessments in math over the break. Her math is online. After either ten hours or so many topics, the computer gives them a test or assessment to see of they understand the work. The assessments can only be done at school. Then if the kids are having someone else do their math at home, the teachers can see the students work on the tests. This makes sense, but Beth is very far behind. She needs the whole spring break to catch up. If the computer stops her after ten hours, the rest of the break would be wasted. I am not trying to take away her break, I just want her to pass math.

4/3/16 senior trip and passports…

I went to Maggie’s senior class parents meeting today. The leader wanted to know if the kids and their families still wanted to go on the senior trip to the Caribbean/Bahamas. No one said yes or no. She said that not enough people were participating in the fund raisers. Only eight of the thirty-three families are participating. It doesn’t look like that kids will be going on this trip, but they haven’t cancelled it either.
Maggie and I went to get her passport done today. The office supply store that we went to to get her picture taken for it didn’t do a good job on the picture. Her face was the wrong color. We didn’t have time to go back and get it taken again so we will try again another day.
I don’t think that Maggie will be upset if her class doesn’t go on the cruse. She will be thrilled if they go somewhere. She would like to go to Cedar Point.
Did your senior class go on a senior trip?

11/8/15 school, finding a job and shoes…

written 3.21.15 – Maggie stays at school until ten o’clock three days a week to do homework. She thinks that she is doing OK in her classes. She has to pass all of her classes to graduate.
Since William can’t find a job we are going to look in the paper and go to a temporary agency. We hadn’t gone there yet because William wanted to find a job on his own. He is ready for help. I don’t want to push him too hard but I do want him to work.
William wants to go back to school. He will need to pay for half of the cost to go back. The girls want to get a job this summer. I have always said no jobs in college so they can concentrate on their classes. I am wondering if it would be better of they all got jobs. But…William has been looking for so long I don’t want the girls to start looking and get jobs right away, while he is still looking. It would make him feel bad and people would tease him.
written 3.22.14 – new shoe store trend, selling shoes with two pairs of laces… in two different colors. Maybe it makes people feel like they bought two pairs of shoes instead of one pair. William and Maggie got new shoes. When we got home I sprayed all of our shoes with Rain and Stain Guard, it really does keep them looking new longer. Our shoe store doesn’t have any stock in the back any more. That really surprised me. Usually if the kids find a pair of shoes that they like but need it in a different size, the attendant goes to the back to see if it is in stock. This time she said, we don’t have any shoes in the back, really nicely, but like that is how it has been for a while. It would save the shoe store a lot of money to not carry all of that inventory.

8/31/15 scholarships, birthday parties and Catan…

written 2.1.14 – Maggie went to school today to work on a scholarship. It is due in on Wednesday. The teachers go in and make sure that all of the kids have all of their paperwork together. Maggie has just started looking for scholarships.
Beth went to a birthday party today for a school friend at the ice skating rink. When they were done they went to Chuck E. Cheese.  Yes these are high school kids but that is where he wanted to go. They had fun ice skating. Beth said that there were a lot of people, and lots of little kids.
William got a board game for Christmas called Catan. I don’t have a real good understanding of the game yet, but I think that it is land and we each try to build the most settlements. It was fun, but there were a lot of the directions that we couldn’t figure out. We did setup the game at ten o’clock at night last Friday but by the time that it was set-up we were too tired to play. There is a web site that we can go on to get more information. We did have fun playing today though, we just filled in our own rules when we couldn’t figure a part out. We can play the correct way when we see the video on the computer with the directions.

8/30/15 school, parent-teacher meeting and volunteering…

written 1.29.14 – zero deg today. I need to get our taxes done. School is closed today.
written 1.30.14 – We had a wind chill of zero today. It actually felt warm. It has been about five degrees with a wind chill of negative twenty to forty all week. We don’t usually have this cold of a winter…this is so odd. The schools were closed. Beth was upset, she loves school…really she loves seeing all of her friends. She spent a lot of time on Facebook with her friends and on YouTube listening to her music. It is so sad to see her sitting in the chair looking at the computer all day, but we don’t have any choices. School is closed, all of the roads are closed because of the cold and the snow. She can’t go out and all of her friends that used to live on this street have moved away.
We have a parent student teacher meeting tonight at Maggie’s high school to look at the her progress. We get our kids transcripts and see if they are on schedule. It is good to get together once a year with the counselor and Maggie to see if she is on track.
William said that he would start volunteering at church. He believes and goes to church with us…only because I told the kids that they had to go to church as long as they live at home. What they believe is between them and God, but they must go to church. We also volunteer about once a year as a family at church, he participates in that as well. We can’t volunteer at church every week unless everyone volunteers. I could volunteer with any of the kids that want to come with me at the early service and then go home during the middle service and get the other kid or kids, and then go back to see the last service, but I am too tired for all of that driving on a Sunday morning. And…the one or ones that volunteered with me would need to go home to pick up the others too, I couldn’t leave them alone at the church without me there. They are great kids and they are older but they aren’t that quiet when I am not there. So when William said that he would volunteer too, it was very exciting!

blog income
I have been looking for a way to bring extra cash into my family without getting a second job. I just want enough extra income to be able to pay the bills but still be able to have time to enjoy my kids. I tried a lot of web sites that offered envelope stuffing, they were all dead ends. Then I tried blogging. I figured that if enough people visited my blog then I could add advertisements and get paid. If I monetized my blog I could take the profit to help my family. I have found Blogsvertise. With them I can have advertisements on my blog, or have guest posts or have banner ads. I am still new to this. If I bring other people in to Blogsvertise I can get a percent of what they make. I have the link on the side of my blog. If you click on it you can register your blog and start making money. Please register from my link so they know that you came in through me. If you need to come back later to register please save my page as a favorite and register through my link when you are ready.
