written 9 ! 26 ! 13 – Maggie is now a senior in high school. We went to parent conferences tonight. Conferences always worry me. Overall my kids do OK, but week to week or even month to month as the homework and projects come and go, the grades are all over the place. This conference also included all of the things that are needed for her to graduate. It is not a long list, but I am concerned that if we miss something that only occurs once in the year, she may not be able to graduate. She took her ACT test last year, but she needs to take it again this year. She can take the SAT, but it is optional. She needs to schedule her classes next month for the next semester. She must get all of the ones that she needs to have enough credits of English, math…We need to find some baby pictures of Maggie. They have a slide show at graduation of the graduates and have current pictures and baby pictures. Her volunteer hours and cultural events for this semester are due December 9th. We added all of these things to the calendar. We need to look for baby pictures for Beth too. We will need them for next year.
written 1/7/12 – Yesterday the girls wanted to stop at the store to spend some of their Christmas money. Maggie wanted K’nex, she builds with them. They are plastic and they snap together. Beth wanted a memory card for her phone. Maggie didn’t get the K’nex. The sets cost more than she had. Also, they were kits to build specific things, like roller coasters or Ferris wheels. She wanted generic pieces. Maggie ended up getting two puzzles. Beth got her memory card.
Maggie has a big project due in a month or two for English? Social Studies? for National History Day. She is going to make a web page for her project. We were going to go to the library this weekend to get books, but we forgot. We will try to go next weekend. She is not sure when the first rough draft is due. When they were young they used to tell me when projects were due…sometimes. Now there isn’t as much information coming home. It is probably better this way, because when they are in college they will need to be able to handle the work on their own. But it does worry me. The colleges will look at their high school grades, so they need to be their best…but at the same time, they need to learn to handle their work themselves (I am always here if they need me). It is a tough balance.
Do you get information from your kids about when things are due at school?
2014 April’s Bible verse: “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace, do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all of these things I hate, says the Lord.” Zechariah 8:16,17
