8/26/15 movies and gardening…

written 1/26/14 – We have too many movies for our movie shelf. We moved some items off of another shelf to make room for the movies. When the movies were moved we now have a lot of the movies that were in the back row out in front. It is like getting a lot of new movies. I may go to the movie shelf and rearrange it more often so that we have fresh choices.
We need to look at our seeds and see when they need to be started. We have had a small garden for the past few years. We have a small yard so we have a small garden. I like to start the seeds inside in the winter…it is so much cheaper…but sometimes we have too much going on and we buy our plants at Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
One year we planted herbs. Some of them are high maintenance. Basil needs to have all of its leaves washed off the night before they are picked. This was too much work for us. We always have tomatoes. Two years ago we had tomatoes in one spot. In November we planted garlic there. The next year the tomatoes grew back, on top of the garlic. It was a busy year for us and we didn’t get the tomatoes moved. When it was time to harvest the garlic, we couldn’t see it. This year if the tomatoes come up in that area again, we are going to move them. Is it good to have the garlic grow for two years?
I would like to take the swing set down so that we would have more room for a garden. The kids say no. It is part of their childhood and they want it to stay. We keep it. If/when we move, I think that it would be a good selling point for the house.

Please be careful if you buy herbs, some of them spread at a rapid rate. Please ask someone who knows about herbs before you plant anything.

8/18/15 gardening…

written 1.14.14 – We will have another garden this summer. We need to look at the seed packages and see when we need to start the seeds. Last year we saved two kinds of tomato seeds This is our first try saving seeds.I’m really hoping that they sprout  Our yard is small so we don’t have a large garden. We also have a swing set that kids won’t let me take down. They did build their fort around it this winter but since they are older mostly they don’t use it at all. We used to have three chickens so they had a large corner of the yard. Our yard is really too small for chickens so we gave them to a friend. They were named Milly, Hattie and Nettie, but the kids called them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We miss them and we still have the chicken coop just in case we can get some chickens later.

We don’t really have enough time to garden so to cut down on the work we have eliminated hoeing. When we plant the garden we put layers of newspaper around the plants, about ten layers thick. Then we put compost over the paper, completely covering the paper, the weeds can’t grow through the paper. The paper falls apart throughout the growing season and is almost all gone at the fall cleanup. If a weed does grow we add more newspaper and compost. The paper and compost also help to keep the moisture in the ground around the plants. Another short cut that we have is that we connect the garden hose to the sprinkler and turn it on and off from the basement. The water valve is in the basement so we leave it on outside and turn it on and off in the basement. I haven’t figured out how to harvest without going outside. I have heard of a book called “Gardening for Lazy People”. The newspaper idea came from that book. I need to get a copy of that book to get more ideas.

7/11/15 School and the garden…

written 8/7/11 – Here are some random thoughts:

William signed up for school today at the college. He has a late class one night a week and was excited to be signing up. He wants to be a programmer.

The garden is ready to plant. On top of the newspaper, we have put flattened cereal boxes and straw. We add the cereal boxes to stop the weeds. Then we dug up dirt from the chicken run. It has a lot of chicken droppings. On top of that I would like to put compost. The garden should be planted soon. When winter comes we can put the hoop house over it.

School starts soon. The kids need haircuts this weekend and we need to look at school supplies and clothes.

Maggie finished her summer homework today. I want to take a look at it before it is printed.

I would like to move to a house that has a bigger yard and a wood burning stove.

7/10/15 moving the movies and planting seeds…

10/3/14 flowers and Lego’s…

written 3/25/12 – We bought some wild flower seeds this weekend to go in the front of the house. These are perennial, so they should come back every year. We got two packs, of two different wild flower mixes. Once we mix them together, there should be a lot of color in the front yard.

Beth helped to set up the Lego League contest at her school this year. It is where groups of younger kids come to her school with remote control robots. They have the robots do things like push Lego’s from one area to another or pick up Lego’s and move them to another area. The Lego’s that they move aren’t single Lego’s, but they are built into specific things, like chickens. The principle asked her if she wanted to come to the school over the summer to work with the Lego league. She and Maggie are also going on a mission trip this summer and have their Zoo Teen interview this weekend to volunteer at the Zoo. She might be able to be in all of it, we don’t know how the hours will work out yet.

9/21/14 birthdays and gardens…

written 3/14/12 – Beth and the boy that she likes have reorganized the calendar so that all of the holidays fall during the school year. They celebrated his birthday last month and are celebrating her birthday this month. I think that they celebrated her birthday, on her birthday too. Maybe they are celebrating them multiple times a year.

Our garden from last year has sprouted. All of the plants from last year were annuals, but maybe because we had such a mild winter, some of the plants are sprouting. I had really wanted time off from the garden this year, but if it all sprouts, we will have a garden. We have a drip hose that we can set up to do the watering and we can mulch it really well so we won’t need to do any weeding. The tomato plants can go out into the middle of the yard so that they can be in the drip line too. I got the idea for the drip line and the mulch from the book “Tips for the Lazy Gardener” by Linda Tilgner. It has really helped a lot to taka away the time needed for watering and weeding. Our water faucet outside can be turned off in our basement. I leave the water faucet turned on outside and shut the valve off in the basement. If the garden needs watering, I turn on the sprinkler from the basement when I get up and turn it off later. I don’t need to go outside to water. That has helped to save a lot of time too.

The garlic is two or three inches high. It needs mulched because we won’t be able to mow the grass that is around it.

Do you have any gardening time savers tips?

9/2/14 Ash Wednesday, snow drops and backpacks…

written 2/22/12 – Today is Ash Wednesday. Our new church doesn’t have an Ash Wednesday service. On a normal Sunday they have four almost full services. If they had an Ash Wednesday service, they would need to have it four times. I understand, but I still miss the service. Maybe next year we can find a church to go to for Ash Wednesday.

The girls are at Bible study tonight.

Our snowdrop flowers have sprouted, and are blooming in the front yard. They are very pretty. The ones in the backyard and side yards haven’t sprouted yet.

Maggie needs a new backpack and a Bible cover. We are going shopping for them this weekend. Her backpack is still good, but she has to carry so many things to school that it is too heavy. She has wanted a backpack with wheels for a long time, but all of the ones on wheels are small backpacks. A friend of hers at school has a suitcase on wheels that he uses. It seems to be OK at her school, no-one makes fun of him, so Maggie feels comfortable getting one. She is very excited. She will only need to pick it up to get it in and out of the house and car and up and down the stairs at school.

We have been looking for a Bible cover, but her Bible is so big that we haven’t found one so far that will fit. We will look again this weekend.

4/11/14 moving boxes, sprouting centerpieces and puzzles…

written 1/8/12 – My goal…again…this next week is to move the boxes in the basement from in front of the shoe shelf. Maybe the boxes will get moved, or maybe I will just write about this every week.

At Thanksgiving we had a cutting from the blackberry bush and another bush as our centerpiece. We also had a glass container of pine cones. The blackberry bush cutting has sprouted a root!

Maggie has one of her puzzles partway together. It is a cartoon of a lot of office people in their cubicles.

I think that it is only about four more months until spring.

I didn’t do any of my weekend jobs this weekend. Tonight I need to match my clothes.

Do you ever have weekends where you don’t get anything done?

2014 April’s Bible verse: “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace, do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all of these things I hate, says the Lord.” Zechariah 8:16,17

I have been looking for a way to bring extra cash into my family without getting a second job. I just want enough extra income to be able to pay the bills but still be able to have time to enjoy my kids. I tried a lot of web sites that offered envelope stuffing, they were all dead ends. Then I tried blogging. I figured that if enough people visited my blog then I could add advertisements and get paid. If I monetized my blog I could take the profit to help my family. I have found Blogsvertise. With them I can have advertisements on my blog, or have guest posts or have banner ads. I am still new to this. If I bring other people in to Blogsvertise I can get a percent of what they make. I have the link on the side of my blog. If you click on it you can register your blog and start making money.
