1/21/17 driving lessons…

Beth and I went driving last weekend. She needed to learn to drive backwards. A friend of mine said that they had taken their kids to an empty parking lot and had them drive in backwards figure eights for two hours. It sounded like a good idea to me. So…Beth and I stopped at a McDonald’s and got a Coke and went to a parking lot. There is a vacant parking lot by us that doesn’t have the parking spaces drawn on it any more but it is still in good shape and it only has one light which is by the curb on one end, not in the middle of the lot. We got there and Beth asked what the driving directions were today. I said she needed to do backward figure eights for two hours. She said OK and started. First she drove making the figure eight really short. I asked her to use more of the parking lot. She made bigger ones. Then she stopped and did the figure eights going the other direction. After about twenty minutes she asked if we were done. I said no. She needed to do this for a full two hours. I said she still seemed shaky and unsure how the car would react when she made different turns. So many times when the girls are driving and they try to back out of a parking space they can’t figure out which way to turn the wheel to get the car to go the way that they want. We were now out of Coke and she was not ready for another hour and forty minutes off backing up, so I suggested that we go back to McDonald’s and get another Coke and come back to the parking lot. After we got the Coke we went back to the parking lot and she asked how much time she had left. I said an hour and forty minutes, I think she was hoping that the driving time to McDonald’s would count towards the backing up time. We do need to do the whole two hours. So she started driving. Beth did figure out how to do small enough circles that it turned my stomach. She didn’t do that all of the time, just when she could catch me off guard, then she would look at me out of he corner of her eye to see if I would react. She made big figure eights, and small ones and many too close to the light pole, just to watch me squirm. In the end she said that this had been a good idea. She felt a lot more confident. She was driving better too. We had spent so much time having her learn to drive forward it was good to have some time learning to back up.

1/5/15 math and Minecraft…

written 8!1!13 – Beth is doing math on the computer. The program is called Aleks. She has until school starts to finish. The computer is starting to move slowly. As each day passes and the computer slows down more and the number of topics she must do per day grows. The stress is growing. The added problem is that it is summer and people want to play. It is difficult to keep up the pace. Also…after every ten hours of work, there is an assessment test. She is at the computer now.

Maggie has a new phone. She plays Minecraft. She builds houses in this game while zombies chase her. When she gets a second story built on a house she is safe from the zombies. The zombies can’t climb ladders or stairs. The game can’t be saved so she plays until the phone resets itself or the phone shuts off. She is so happy with this game.

We need to get Maggie’s drivers permit renewed. She drove over the summer and was getting good at it. But we didn’t drive enough that she could get her license. Maggie needs to get letters of reference from her teachers this year. She is a senior and will need them in future years for scholarship applications and for employment references. She needs to have them written on school letterhead.

9/1/14 household jobs, no chickens and driving tests…

written 2/19/12- The kids have switched household jobs. Maggie is now on break, Beth has the dishes and William has laundry.

This spring we are not going to get any chickens. We had chickens last year, and after about a year we gave them to a friend. It was a nice learning experience, but I need to be in the house right now. We still have the chicken coop, so we can get more chickens another time.

Maggie had mentioned last week that she was ready to learn to drive. I found on the website what paperwork we needed to take in for her to take the written driving test. I am excited. I think that she will enjoy driving. When I told Maggie what paperwork was needed to take in and that we could go next weekend, she looked panicked. Maggie said that she couldn’t study for the driving test now since she has a big paper due this month. She said that she will let me know when she is ready.

4/2/14 Finding the Bible study house…

written 1/4/12 – Our evening has revolved around high school age kids. Tonight is Bible study for Maggie and Beth. Maggie’s group meets at the church. Beth’s meets at someones house. We tried in December to find the house and couldn’t find it. We had a street name and a house number, but no phone to call and get more directions. Today we had a street name, a house number, a street that it was by, the high school that it is by, a phone number and a working phone. We still got lost. We found it on the map before we left the house. We were in the correct neighborhood the last time. It took about five texts and five phone calls, but we found the house.

When the kids need to to get directions to someplace new, it is always an adventure trying to find it.

How do you get to new places? What do you do when you get lost?

2/28/14 driving the car, electricity and birthdays…

written 9/4/11 – William wanted to back the car out of the driveway yesterday. He did a great job!!! Maybe he will want to get his drivers permit soon. He has been pulling the car into the drive for a while, but not backing it up.

There was a big rain storm here last night. The electricity went off sometime in the night. In the morning, the food in the freezer was still frozen but the food and the air in the fridge was not as cold as normal. The power came back on at about 9:30 AM. This time we had a flashlight with batteries. I would like to get a radio that has a crank to generate power. Then we wouldn’t feel so isolated in a storm, we could tell if it was only our neighborhood or a larger area that was without power.

I have heard that a way to tell if your power had gone off in the freezer is to take an ice cube and put it in a Ziploc bag and put it in the freezer. If the power goes out for a long time and comes back on then the ice cube will melt and you will know to look at the food in the freezer.

Maggie turns 16 this week. I wonder if she will want her ears pierced? She also could have her drivers permit.

How old were you when you started driving?

Thanks for stopping by! Please come back tomorrow and see what new adventures we have found!!!

2/22/14 Walking, learning to drive, gardens and braces…

written 8/14/11 – I did get a short nap today.

The girls and I took a short walk around the cemetery today. Just a short walk. We live right by a cemetery. Most of the graves are from the 1930’s so there are not a lot of visitors. The city does a great job of keeping the grass mowed and trimmed. Our little neighborhood (we live on a dead end street) spends a lot of time in the cemetery. Our yards are small, and it gives us a large, safe place to walk.  It was good to get some exercise.markers

I have been having the kids pull the car up to the garage. Maggie pulled the car in today. It was her first time to drive. Beth is next. William was last week. I want them to start pulling in the car all of the time. They should get drivers licenses…someday. When they feel ready to get their licenses, I want them to feel comfortable in the car. William will be 22 on his birthday, Maggie will be 16 and Beth will be 15. They just aren’t ready yet. No one wants to get the learners packet.

We grew some melon plants inside from seeds for part of the summer. When we planted the garden in the backyard these two plants…and all of their vines…were moved outside. The vines were about ten feet long. They had attached themselves to everything and were difficult to pick up without crushing or bending. Their leaves have started perking up. I haven’t seen any melons starting to form.

William got his braces off today. He has such a big smile and his teeth look great!!!

I have been looking for a way to bring extra cash into my family without getting a second job. I just want enough extra income to be able to pay the bills but still be able to have time to enjoy my kids. I tried a lot of web sites that offered envelope stuffing, they were all dead ends. Then I tried blogging. I figured that if enough people visited my blog then I could add advertisements and get paid. If I monetized my blog I could take the profit to help my family. I have found Blogsvertise. With them I can have advertisements on my blog, or have guest posts or have banner ads. I am still new to this. If I bring other people in to Blogsvertise I can get a percent of what they make. I have the link on the side of my blog. If you click on it you can register your blog and start making money.
