written 1/14/14 – Maggie got all of her classes scheduled today. She is happy with her schedule. I am so relieved that she is done. At the last parent meeting they said that we should get a copy of all of their syllabuses. Then we could know when papers are due and when tests are. Then if we see that a big test is coming up and our kids are not studying, we can ask our kids about the upcoming test. It is not to follow their every assignment, just to make sure that they don’t fall off of any cliffs.
Beth has finals starting tomorrow. She has been studying. She loves seeing all of her friends at school and is happy to be back.
A lot of the snow has melted. This last weekend we could see most of the streets. There are still piles of snow in parking lots. They are so big and cold that it takes a while to thaw them.
How is the weather where you are? Please stop by again!
written 10 ! 16 ! 13 – Beth’s locker at school won’t open. The problem started last week. Beth tried to get it open. Her friends tried to open it. She then went to the janitor. He has been working on it. It must be stuck really well. Today the janitor took off the latch that moves up and down. It still wont open. Tomorrow he is going to try to take the hinges off. They want to get it open without loosing the use of the locker. The problem is that Beth has all of her books and notebooks in the locker. She can’t study. If she had been younger, this may have been all fun, but she will have a lot of work to make up once the locker is opened.
written 10 ! 6 ! 13 – Here are some random thoughts. I think that Beth has decided to be candy corn for Halloween, but there are still two weeks until the Halloween dance. We need to register Maggie and Beth next week for their ACT tests. We need to put the garden hose away for the winter and get our Halloween witch out and put her on the porch. She is one of the ones that looks like she has run into a telephone pole. The kids and I used to put the witch up each year when they were little. To them the witch was huge, so it took all four of us to carry her. Then we got her set on the porch. It probably only took fifteen minutes, but it was a lot of good memories. Now the kids don’t always have time to help put the witch up. I am not sure if it is because they have homework , or if is because they know that as soon as it is up , I will start saying ” Oh no, there is a witch on the porch” every time that we come home.
Our neighbor likes to decorate for Halloween. They always have a skeleton that looks like he is climbing out of the ground.
written 10 ! 3 ! 13 – We are always looking for more local places to go. We look at the local weekly newspapers that are available outside of the library a lot. The other day I was at a rest stop and saw all of the tourist information. There were a lot of pamphlets about single events and some thicker booklets about towns or categories…like a camping booklet. Some of the events had already happened this summer, but I took a pamphlet anyway. It may be an event that we can go to next year. There is a lot more to do in our area than I realized.
Our new cat is almost as big as our first cat. The first cat would like to sleep more, but the new cat thinks that she is a big time wrestler. The first cat ignores her as long as she can they she tries to say go away. The second cat plays more, thinking that the fun has begun. Our first cat still looks at us like ,”why did you bring her here?”
written 8/24/13 – Last night we went to the Art Museum. I really thought that it closed at ten. We were there for a half hour before it closed. We wanted to go to the glass blowing area, but we didn’t make it over there. We saw a lot of the museum and took a lot of pictures. When we got back into the car Maggie said that she can’t use the Art Museum as a cultural event because we have been there before. She could use the glass blowing because she hasn’t turned it in as an event before. Maggie and I need to be sure that we are going to places that she can turn in. We had fun, but we really need to accomplish this goal. Tomorrow we are going to the horse races.
We haven’t been to the art museum in a while. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until we walked into the first gallery. We don’t know anything about art. But it is fun to go and see all of the pictures and statues. When the kids were little we used to go every Friday. The museum is free and they had a lot going on on Fridays. There was a kid table where the kids could do crafts. Many times there was a play, and musical groups were there. Sometimes they were groups from high schools and sometimes it was more like an orchestra. They also had tours. I didn’t take the kids on the tours, they were too young and would have been board. If I ever went alone I would go on the tour and then tell the kids the information the next time that we were there. We liked the plays the best. I didn’t realize how much the museum filled me up until we walked in. I took a lot of pictures.
Outside of our libraries, there are a lot of free local papers. They have lists of what is happening in the area. I picked up a copy of all of them yesterday. They have a lot of choices for cultural events and volunteering. We need to get this done soon. Maggie has been in school for a week and the homework will be starting up soon.
Last week we ate dinner with chop sticks. We don’t do this very often. It is fun now and then. We try to do this on nights when we are having sticky food, like something with cream soup on it. Sticky foods are easier for new chop stick users to pick up.
When the kids were little I had a list of skills that kids needed to learn . Eating with chop sticks was on the list. I used it as a guide in teaching my kids skills. I can’t find my list and I can’t find it on the internet. If anyone sees it on the internet, please let me know the link. I would love to go back and see if we have missed anything.
