William has suddenly grown up a lot. He has started doing the laundry without being asked and he shaved this month after being asked one time. He will only shave once a month.
Beth went to a town about two hours away last Saturday with one of her friends. He doesn’t drive either so his mom, and another lady went with them. Beths friends girlfriend had moved and they were going to see her. They left at about nine in the morning and were coming back that same day. This is one of her first trips that was not organized by the school, that Beth has gone on without me. They stopped for lunch. Beth said that they had the best pizza that she had ever had. I asked if it was because she was really hungry, she said no it really was great pizza. They got back at about five o’clock. Beth had had a good time. We went to church on Saturday evening because Beth was back and Maggie was volunteering on Sunday.
We are still looking for a winter jacket for Maggie. We did find one, it was the style that she likes and it was a brand name coat and it looked new. When she tried it on it was too small. We will keep looking.
Maggie went volunteering with her Enviromental Science group last Sunday. She needs to join a club. College isn’t just going to class, she needs some friends. Maggie left the campus with about four students and the teacher in a van. Maggie remembered to bring a drink and a snack without me having to remind her. That was cool. When we got to the campus to the meeting place, no one was there.Maggie was a bit worried. We were about fifteen minutes early. She said that maybe they were meeting inside. I parked and she went to find the group, she left her drink and snacks in the car. She came back a few minutes later saying that she had found them. She took her snack and water and left.
When I picked up Maggie about four hours later she looked so alive and happy. They had cut down the xxxxxx bush which grows to about forty feet tall and grows wild in the area. Maggie told me the name of what they were cutting down. When I talk to the kids I can’t take notes as we talk but by the time I try to write it down, I have forgotten all of the important words. There had been about ten or fifteen students, one teacher and one man that put something on the stumps after one was cut down so that they didn’t sprout again. They used hedge clippers to cut them down, so the trunks must have been small. Maggie said that the teacher directed them where to cut. When they had some cut they put them into big piles. She thought that the fire department would come in and do a controlled burn go get rid of the piles. The teacher gave them extra credit points for each hour that they stayed. The group cuts these plants down on the first and third Sunday of the month. Maggie had a great time and wants to go back. When we got home I asked her to write on the calendar the information about the next chance to volunteer.
When the kids were little I wrote everything on the calendar. Slowly I have let the kids write their own events on the calendar. At first they wrote everything too big. If there event was only for an hour there wasn’t room to write in a second event. They have gotten a lot better with time.
I tried to change the theme of my blog and lost some of the sidebars like the translator. Please bear with me as I try to find them.
written 10/8/12 – We are going to go out today to get Beth a winter jacket. Her jacket from last year is too small. Maggie’s and Williams jackets still fit.
It was cold out this morning. Beth needs a jacket that will fit into her locker.
Written 2/1/12 – William got a board game for Christmas called Catan. We don’t have a real good understanding of the game yet, but we think that we each try to build the most settlements. It was fun, but there were a lot of the directions that we didn’t understand. We did setup the game at ten o’clock at night last Friday which could have added to the confusion. There is a web site that we can go on to get more information. We did have fun playing though, we just filled in our own rules when we couldn’t figure a part out. When can play the correct way when we see the video on the computer.
written 4/14/12 – William worked on the dishes today, Beth did the laundry and Maggie needs to make an air gun for science class. It uses a bucket and some plastic and a bungee cord. A hole is cut into the bottom of the bucket and onto the top is taped some plastic. When the bungee cord is pulled back and let go the air rushes out of the cut hole in the bottom. To get an “A”, her air gun must be able to blow out a candle at 20 feet. She needs to write a paper on the project too and do a drawing. It is due in a week or two.
written 2/26/12 – We made s’mores last night. Beth didn’t want to make any. Maggie heated up her marshmallow in the microwave. She said that it would take less time and leave less of a carbon footprint. William and I got sticks from the backyard and toasted the marshmallows over the flame on the stove. William whittled a few sticks so that they had points. It smelled like camping in the kitchen. I said that we should all get our sleeping bags and sleep in the living room. The kids said that if they were ten years old, that would be fun. Toasting a marshmallow takes a lot of skill. It was hard to get one to toast and not burn. Beth did come in later and toast a marshmallow over the stove.
